Coronavirus test on Chinese citizen negative – Lagos govt

The Lagos State Government has affirmed that the Chinese citizen presented at the Reddington Hospital, Ikeja on Wednesday on suspicion of being infected with Coronavirus has tested negative.
Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, made this known through a press statement on Thursday, noting that “the likelihood of COVID-19 infection in this particular patient was very low and the conclusion of investigations and sophisticated testing confirmed that no case of Coronavirus exists in Lagos State till date.”
“I would like to reassure Lagosians that our vigilance levels are very high and we are putting more measures in place to safeguard the state,” he said.
While giving details of the investigations, Abayomi explained that “the Ministry of Health’s attention was drawn to a suspected case of Coronavirus at Reddington Hospital, a private health facility located at Ikeja but from our investigations, we gathered that a Chinese citizen who arrived Nigeria from China seven weeks ago was presented at Reddington Hospital yesterday (Wednesday) complaining about fever. The hospital, in keeping with the advisory we earlier issued, correctly maintained a high index of suspicion, isolated the patient and reported the case to the Ministry.
“We took up the case, transferred the patient to the State Isolation Unit at the Mainland hospital which is our specialised infectious disease hospital. His blood samples were taken to the Virology laboratory for analysis and it came out negative.”
Abayomi appealed to citizens to refrain from posting unverified news that could cause unnecessary anxiety in the community and urged residents to disregard any information about the novel Coronavirus that does not emanate from official communication channels of the Ministry of Health or his office.

'I killed my girlfriend because she left me for wealthy men after my money got finished' - Arrested suspect

A 31-year-old man paraded by the Taraba State Police Command has confessed to killing his girlfriend, Imbajuri Ambisi.

The suspect identified as Munda Bala reportedly conspired with his two friends to kill his girlfriend who they burnt to ashes before burying her in a bush.

The native of Donga Local Government Area who was paraded alongside some ashes and bones of the deceased, blamed the sad act on jealousy and hardship.

He told newsmen;

“I fell in love with Imbajuri Ambisi. She became my girlfriend; I got her pregnant and she delivered a baby boy and killed him after seven months.
“This got me angry and I couldn’t tell anyone. My money got finished and she ran away to some wealthy guys who engage in the selling of rosewoods to foreigners.”
“This got me jealous and I met two of my friends who advised me that if I really want my heart to be at rest, I have to kill her, hence our decision to eliminate her."

Taraba State Police Spokesperson, David Misal said a manhunt has already been launched to arrest the other fleeing suspects.

Bishop Oyedepo denied US Visa

The General Overseer of the Living Faith Church Worldwide a.k.a Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo was denied visa by the Lagos office of the United States Embassy on Thursday January 30.

Why Bishop Oyedepo was denied a US visa by the embassy wasn't made clear but he was given the standard default explanation of not being qualified for visa renewal and was urged to try again.

But ace comedian Bovi who was denied US visa few weeks ago, was lucky with the embassy this time, as he was issued the visa. However his wife, Kris Asimonye Ugboma was not as lucky as she was denied the travelling document.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the Pastor and businessman created a scene at the facility as he insisted that he has not violated any rules or committed any crime to have warranted being denied a renewal of his visa.

When Oyedepo asked his bodyguards to get his phones so he can make some calls, he was reportedly told he can't make calls within the precincts of the visa-issuing section of the embassy.

Though Bishop Oyedepo is yet to publicly comment on the incident, ThisDay reported that he told the Embassy's authorities that he has been traveling to the United States since the 1980s.

The report is coming days after LIB reported that President Donald Trump confirmed his intention of imposing a travel ban on seven countries including Nigeria.

NUJ Borno condemns arrest of Daily Trust reporter by armed soldiers in Maiduguri

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Borno Council has condemned the arrest of Daily Trust reporter Olatunji Omirin by armed soldiers.

Omirin, who was arrested on Thursday, by operatives of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri has been released, the Executive Director/Editor-in-Chief of the paper, Malam Naziru Mikailu, confirmed last night.
“Yes, Omirin is back at home with his family and he is hale and hearty,” Mikailu said.
“He was questioned by the military over a story he authored concerning activities of the Boko Haram insurgents,” he said.

Omirin who joined the Daily Trust in 2011 and reporting from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, was reportedly whisked away to the Nigerian Army 7 Division Maimalari Cantonment headquarters. The soldiers had earlier stormed the Daily Trust Regional Office twice before invading the NUJ secretariat to arrest the journalist.

Witnesses at the Borno State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists Press Centre, where the reporter was arrested, said he was picked around 4:40pm when a uniform soldier, armed with a rifle and two others in mufti. The soldiers reportedly invaded the press centre and instantly handcuffed the reporter while he was eating, without any explanation.

A source at the NUJ said the soldiers had been engaging Omirin on the phone since last week claiming they wanted to meet him for a change of name advert placement.
“One of the soldiers in mufti entered the press centre while others were inside the army vehicle. He asked for Tunji and when Tunji was asked of having knowledge of his guests and how far he had gone with the advert, he said it has been published. He was speaking on phone at the same time with some people and we then heard him shouting, calling the name of one the journalists at the press centre that was inside in the NUJ cchairman’s office. The reporter came out of the office and met the soldiers putting handcuff on Tunji and the two other soldiers in mufti alighted from the vehicle along with another soldier in uniform,” the source said.

A statement issued by Bulama Talba, the Chairman of Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ Borno Council, described the move by the military as "detrimental to the operation of free democracy and a trample on the dignity of professional journalists". Read the statement below.

"The Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ Borno Council hereby expresses bitterness of all our members over the manner personnel of the Nigeria Army came, arrested with handcuffs Olatunji Omirin reporter with Daily trust newspaper at the Press center Maiduguri Thursday afternoon 30 January, 2020 and took him to Maimalari barracks," the statement reads.
"Although he has been released evening of the same day, the Union sees this move by the military as detrimental to the operation of free democracy and a trample on the dignity of professional journalists which unfortunately is repeating itself after similar incident occurred same time last year.
We the members of the Pen profession in Borno State have been and will continue to live up to our responsibilities of informing the government and citizens on happenings as a way of promoting the safety of all and improve living conditions at all times.
The Union members from various mediums have been, with all sense of responsibility, carrying out duties to put issues in the right perspectives for proper agenda setting by government and the military and mobilizing the citizenry to support programmes and operations that follow, which Olatunji Omirin has been doing remarkably well.
NUJ feels it is quite unfortunate that this is happening now when we all need to be on the same page to move our country from armed conflict to peaceful resolutions of disputes for development to thrive instead of playing into the wishes of elements that promote discord in the nation.
We can do better by calling concerned media organizations, NUJ as well as other stakeholders for regular interactions on finding a common ground on the way forward beyond this modus operandi."

Trader to die by hanging for armed robbery and raping a student

A 45-year-old trader, Morufu Adekoya a.k.a Six Tiger has been handed a death sentence by an Ikeja High Court after being found guilty of armed robbery and rape.

The convict who was sentenced to death by hanging for armed robbery and 15 years imprisonment for raping a 24-year-old student, was initially arraigned in court alongside two others – Adefowope Kazeem (a 28-year-old cobbler) and Chief Jimoh Balogun (a 58-year-old traditional ruler and Baale of Odo-Onosa community since September 2013).

Adekoya reportedly committed the said offence on March 26, 2014 at Odo-Onosa Epe community of Lagos. State prosecutor, Mrs. O. R. Ahmed Muili alleged that he and other co-defendants who were heavily armed invaded the community, robbed the residents of their valuables and also raped a 24-year-old undergraduate.

While Kazeem and Balogun were discharged and acquitted of all the four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, armed robbery and rape, Adekoya was found guilty of rape and armed robbery.

Justice Adebiyi who presided over the case said;

 “The court finds that the prosecution has failed to prove that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants conspired to commit the alleged offence of robbery. The prosecution’s evidence pointed only to the 1st defendant (Adekoya) who was positively identified at the scene of the crime.
“However, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants are hereby discharged on count 1 (conspiracy to robbery). The 2nd and 3rd defendants are also discharged on counts 2, 3 and 4 (armed robbery and rape).
“But the evidence of the presence of the 1st defendant and others (at large), who took part in the offence, is overwhelming and the prosecution has proven beyond reasonable doubt a case of armed robbery and rape against Adekoya.”

Policeman allegedly kills Abia Youth leader over land

The land tussle between the Enyimba Economic City Land Acquisition Committee and indigenes of Ugwuati community in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State has gotten quite violent as a policeman attached to the committee has been accused of shooting a youth leader identified Mr. Nwamaka Ogbuji, who died on the spot.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at a meeting between the team and indigenes of Ugwuati community to finalise the acquisition of land for the much-talked about Enyimba Economic City (EEC) on Wednesday January 15.

Three other people allegedly sustained gunshot injuries and are now battling to live following the shooting which ensued after Ogbuji and other youths insisted they won't be letting go of their lands as they are predominantly farmers.

An eyewitness told New Telegraph;

“The youth were unarmed. They gathered at the town’s hall to listen to the committee members. The youth explained to the delegation that they were not prepared to mortgage their lives for a project they didn’t understand. It was when the arguments started that the policemen that came with the government delegation started shooting indiscriminately. Our people are not stupid. They didn’t fight anybody. They only refused to give out their land to people they didn’t trust.
“Go to Obuaku city, you’ll see how land was acquired there some years back. Now, they have come with this story of Enyimba Economic City, which we don’t believe is a serious thing. The people are even afraid they might use our land for RUGA. You can’t just take away people’s land without their approval.”

Abia State Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon who confirmed the incident accused youths of the community of attempting to snatch the rifles of its men deployed with the team.

He said;
"Last week, the state government wrote and asked us to bring some security to accompany Enyimba Economic City Committee members to attend the meeting. The policemen were sent as requested by the state government. If the community had a problem, they should have sorted it out among themselves. But my information is that the community people disagreed. In the process, the youth trooped out in large numbers, attacked the policemen and abducted members of the committee.
“They attacked the policemen and some of them attempted to snatch rifles from the policemen. As they were struggling, a rifle fired. The bullet strayed and killed one of them, while the other two people were injured.  When I was told, I had to send re-enforcement to rescue three members of the committee that were abducted. That is the extent the youth in the place can be lawless. If you have problem over land with the government, you don’t need to attack people. You take it to the government, not to attack the police or the people sent to do whatever the government asked them to do. They (youths) were armed with machetes.”
